The lessons in this unit will focus on the role of foundations and how they help cultural subgroups within communities. It will also define philanthropy and increase the students' knowledge about how it allows individuals to contribute to their community locally by allowing the students to make some decisions about how they will raise money to be donated to a local organization.
Eight 45 minute class periods
The Learners will:
- identify a cause in the community that needs to be addressed.
- describe how a corporate sponsor helps communities.
- describe how corporate funds are spent for the common good.
- explain the need to preserve treasures for future use.
- list examples of philanthropy in various cultural subcultures.
- describe one philanthropic organization or foundation for each subculture.
Charting of cultural foundations or organizations.
It is advisable that teachers secure access to the Internet in the classroom or obtain information ahead of time and copy it to be shared with students.
