Unit of 3 lessons
printEmail this Unit Overview

Unit Purpose:

Through the use of creative dramatics and the Internet, students will learn about global warming, its causes, effects, and possible solutions.  In the process they will conduct a “green audit” of their households and complete a project designed to teach others about global warming.

Focus Question:
What is a person’s responsibility for preserving and protecting the global environment?

Unit Objectives:

The learner will:

  • explain the Greenhouse Effect.
  • explain how the Greenhouse Effect contributes to global warming.
  • teach the Greenhouse Effect/global warming to a family member.
  • identify three greenhouse gases.
  • identify two causes of global warming.
  • identify two effects of global warming.
  • identify four possible solutions to global warming.
  • conduct a “green audit” of his/her household. (see Lesson Two, Attachment One)
  • list three changes that can be made within the household to help work against global warming. (see Lesson Two, Attachment One)
  • create a project designed to teach others about global warming.

Service Experience:

Although lessons in this unit contain service project examples, decisions about service plans and implementation should be made by students, as age appropriate.

Learners will create a project of their choice designed to teach others about global warming, its causes, its effects, and possible solutions.

Unit Assessment:

Assessments will include evaluations of the learners’ work and/or performance and teacher observation.

School/Home Connection:

  • “Copy-and-Paste” Class/School Newsletter Information Insert:
This week we will begin a new unit on global warming. We will explore exactly what global warming is, its effects, and what we can do to stop it.  Because this is a hot topic (no pun intended!) be on the lookout for any newspaper or magazine articles on global warming and have your child bring it in.  Also, students will be asked to complete several homework assignments that will involve the entire family, so be ready!
  • Interactive Parent / Student Homework:
Attachment One, Lesson One: The Greenhouse Effect and Global Warming
Attachment One, Lesson Two: Causes, Effects, Solutions
