Purpose:

Learners will apply their new knowledge by completing a project designed to teach others about global warming.

Duration:

One 15-minute period plus additional time for completion of individual projects.

Objectives:

The learner will:

  • create a project designed to teach others about global warming.

Service Experience:

Although this lesson contains a service project example, decisions about service plans and implementation should be made by students, as age appropriate.

Learners will create a project of their choice designed to teach others about global warming, its causes, its effects, and possible solutions.

Materials:

  • A copy of the Global Warming Menu Board for each learner (see Attachment One)
  • Various materials as needed for projects

Instructional Procedure(s):

Anticipatory Set:
Teacher and learners review everything they have learned about global warming. Remind learners that as responsible global citizens, it is our job to share this knowledge with others so that they may become more aware and active.  Introduce the idea that they will be completing projects designed to teach others
about global warming and that these projects will be shared in some way to be determined later. Ask them to be thinking of ways the class might be able to share their projects with others.

  • Teacher and learners will go over the menu board together. (see Attachment One)

  • Learners will choose what project they would like to complete.

  • Learners begin working on their projects.

  • Sometime while the learners are completing their projects, hold a brainstorming session to come up with ideas on how to share their knowledge and projects with others (peers, families and the community).

  • After the learners have completed their projects and made a presentation, hold a class reflection forum.  Ask the learners to reflect on what project they did and why they choose to do that project.  Ask them what they have learned from this, how they feel about the activity.  Ask them to think about what more they can do to “spread” the word about global warming.

Assessment:

The teacher will assess the final project completed by each learner or groups of learners.

School/Home Connection:

Invite other students, families and community members to view the completed projects.
