Unit Overview:
This lesson gives students an opportunity to "be" philanthropists in their own classroom. Students will also learn the characteristics of a volunteer. They will identify some businesses in their own community as "for profit" or "nonprofit." Students will have an opportunity to explore job opportunities in the nonprofit sector by listening to speakers from various organizations and asking questions.
Unit Purpose:
The purpose of this unit is to increase students' knowledge about various kinds of philanthropy, from individuals doing "random acts of kindness," to corporate philanthropy and careers in the nonprofit sector.
Unit Objectives:
The Learners will:
- analyze his or her classroom community and suggest individual acts of philanthropy that may take place within it.
- compare/contrast volunteer and non-volunteer jobs and define the economic concept of "opportunity cost."
- describe how philanthropy is often a corporate act.
- cite possible careers in the nonprofit sector.
Unit Assessment:
There is a formal unit written assessment after Lesson Four: Careers in Philanthropy.
